“HYBE Original Story,” developed by the Korean entertainment company HYBE, is a project that creates diverse story content through collaborations with artists. Among them, the webtoon “Black Moon: The Altar of the Moon,” created in collaboration with ENHYPEN, has been a massive hit, surpassing 200 million views (as of September 2025) since serialization began in January 2022. Even after the main story concluded, additional titles in the “DARK MOON” series have followed, including “Black Moon: The Grey City,” “Children of Vamfield,” and “Black Moon: The Two Moons.”
Now, through a collaboration between Aniplex and HYBE, “Black Moon: The Altar of the Moon” has finally been adapted into an anime! Broadcasting began this January and has been well received. Animation production is handled by TROYCA, known for works such as “Idolish7,” and the cast features a star-studded lineup of voice actors including Kikunosuke Toya and Chiaki Kobayashi. The opening and ending themes include three songs by ENHYPEN, including a brand-new Japanese track, heightening the dramatic fantasy romance.
Story
At the prestigious Decelis Academy, seven vampires live while hiding their true identities. One day, a transfer student named Suha arrives. From the moment they see her, the seven are irresistibly drawn to her—but Suha harbors deep hatred toward vampires, stemming from the murder of her childhood friend. As a series of murders occurs nearby, Suha herself is placed in danger. With werewolves—enemies of vampires—also becoming involved, a fateful drama that transcends eternity begins to unfold.
The anime showcases dynamic battle action using supernatural abilities and lively exchanges among the seven, who share a brotherly bond. Since streaming allows viewers to start from episode one, now is the perfect time to dive into this story of love and connection between vampires and a girl.
Interview with ENHYPEN
— How did it feel seeing the story animated, with movement and voices?
JUNGWON: When I read the webtoon, I imagined the characters’ voices. Honestly, I wondered if it might feel strange once actual voices were added, or if it might lessen the immersion. But thanks to the many experts who supported this project, I think it actually enhanced the immersion. When I first watched it, it felt truly surreal.
HEESEUNG: The voice of Heli (the character inspired by HEESEUNG) is performed by Kikunosuke Toya, a voice actor I’ve been a fan of for a while, so I was really moved.
JAY: I was amazed at how faithfully the animation recreates the webtoon artwork.
JAKE: First of all, I was surprised by the quality of the visuals. I don’t usually watch anime, but this is one I definitely have to watch!
SUNGHOON: As we’ve grown, it feels like “DARK MOON” has grown alongside us. Seeing the characters move and hearing their voices was very fresh, and I was reminded again of how similar the members and their characters can be.
SUNOO: I was happy because Shion (the character inspired by SUNOO) came across as very charming.
NI-KI: It felt surreal that “DARK MOON” was adapted into an anime, and I’m happy thinking that ENGENE (our fan name) will enjoy watching it.
— If you could have one of the seven supernatural abilities (telepathy, fire manipulation, shadow control, transformation into a wolf, speed, charm, super strength), which would you choose?
JUNGWON: Telepathy. I chose it because I think I could convey my feelings directly to ENGENE.
HEESEUNG: I’d like to have telepathy.
JAY: Speed—so that if I oversleep and miss my alarm, I can move quickly!
JAKE: I like Jino’s ability, but I think having speed would be really fun too.
SUNGHOON: I’m a bit envious of the ability to control fire.
SUNOO: Speed or charm would be nice!
NI-KI: I think controlling shadows is the coolest ability.
— Tell us about recording the theme song “One In A Billion (Japanese ver.).”
HEESEUNG: The song’s energetic sound gave me a lot of power as well.
JAY: It felt strange singing a song we released before again after some time. I was able to record it with a slightly more mature voice, which was fun.
JAKE: Recording the song again in Japanese felt very fresh. Some parts were challenging, but I’m happy with how it turned out.
— The ending themes include “CRIMINAL LOVE” and “Fatal Trouble.” What should listeners look out for?
SUNGHOON: “CRIMINAL LOVE” is an R&B/hip-hop track about dangerous love that continues to yearn even within a cruel, repeating fate. The captivating atmosphere and the looping hook with the phrase “CRIMINAL LOVE” are key points.
SUNOO: “Fatal Trouble” is a rock ballad that highlights a sense of tragedy. Hearing it during the ending credits enhances the atmosphere, and it fits the series perfectly.
— Your 7th Mini Album “THE SIN : VANISH” was released in January. Which track is your favorite and why?
JUNGWON: “Stealer.” It’s a genre I personally love, and I was hooked from the first listen.
HEESEUNG: “Sleep Tight.” It’s JAKE’s first self-composed song, and I participated in writing some of the lyrics. The guitar sound is very appealing.
JAY: “Stealer” feels fresh and mysterious—very captivating.
JAKE: “Sleep Tight” is very special to me. I’m so happy my first composed song was included in the album and that I can share my music with ENGENE.
SUNGHOON: “Big Girls Don’t Cry” is my favorite. I love the groove.
SUNOO: I like “Lost Island.” It’s a love song but also very soothing, so I recommend it.
NI-KI: The title track “Knife” made the biggest impression on me. The stage performance is really cool!
— ENHYPEN has had a vampire-inspired concept since debut. What do you think is the appeal of vampires?
JUNGWON: Not aging, and having that cool, chilly aura.
HEESEUNG: Vampires usually look human, but they have differences in what they like or dislike—that contrast is appealing.
JAY: It’s a classic IP—you never get tired of it.
JAKE: I feel vampires are similar to us in some ways. They live slightly unusual lives, and there’s something relatable in the emotions they express.
SUNGHOON: They have strength but also delicacy, and a charm that captivates people.
SUNOO: Their mysterious and special aura is their strength.
NI-KI: They have a firmly established worldview.
— Finally, a message to fans enjoying the broadcast?
JUNGWON: I remember how fresh and fun it felt when I first watched the anime. I hope you all enjoy it too. Let’s stay warm this winter together with “DARK MOON” and ENHYPEN!
NI-KI: I’d be so happy if you enjoy watching “DARK MOON”!
